$3 bn desalination plant to be built in Suez Canal Axis

CAIRO – 20 June 2017: A desalination plant at a cost of $3 billion will be built east of Port-Said governorate bordering the Suez Canal to provide prospective projects in the Suez Canal Development Axis with desalinated water from the Mediterranean. The plant will also meet the eastern governorate’s water needs.

Ashour Abou El Maaty, an official at the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater, told Egypt Today on Tuesday that the plant capacity will be 150,000 cubic meters daily in the first phase.

Abou El Maaty added that the executive plan duration is two years and half including the second phase with the plant’s production capacity reaching 250,000 cubic meters daily.

The planned investments in the Suez Canal Development Axis include an industrial zone, fish farming, and agricultural projects. The industrial zone comprises enterprises in the sectors of food processing, packaging, car and equipment assembling, a tourist city, and others. The planned investments shall also include a road network interconnecting areas in the axis.
