CAIRO - 1 November 2018: Minister of Transport Hesham Arafat on Thursday discussed in a meeting with the African Development Bank (AfDB) country manager for Egypt, Malinne Blomberg, means of fostering bilateral cooperation in the different fields of transportation.
During the meeting, Arafat reviewed available investment and funding opportunities in the transportation sector, which is witnessing a quantum leap in the current phase.
Also, the minister said that the country’s railway system is seeing a substantial development, which in turn would contribute to offering promising investment opportunities in this field.
In a related context, the minister probed with the AfDB manager the possibility for providing the necessary funding for upgrading the railroad lines through applying an automated control system for trains.
Arafat clarified that the ministry is working on installing electrical signals at the railway network nationwide.
With regard to the maritime transport sector, the minister revealed new opportunities for cooperation between the AfDB and the Egyptian Authority for Maritime Safety to help modernize the crisis management center for maritime transport and the maritime safety operations center at the authority.
Concerning dry ports and logistics centers, he added that the ministry is considering placing a host of dry ports and logistics centers on the investment map to improve the sea harbors' services and reduce the waiting time for ships, in addition to accelerating the process of unloading goods.
As for the river transport sector, the minister pointed out that the ministry is working on stimulating investments in a number of river ports to maximize the role of river transport in the delivery of goods.
For her part, Blomberg said the AFDB is willing to cooperate with the Transport Ministry in these projects.
