Egypt launches €100 million development project in Imbaba

CAIRO – 22 May 2017: Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Development Mostafa Madbouly launched on Monday the Imbaba Urban Upgrading Project, targeting one of the most populated and unplanned urban areas of Egypt, at a total cost of €100 million ($111.7 m).

The announcement came during the Second Ministerial Conference on Sustainable Urban Development, hosted by the Union for the Mediterranean (UFM) in Cairo.

A number of ministers responsible for housing, municipal affairs and urban development, as well as high-rank representatives from the 43 member states of the UFM attended the conference, which took place between May 20 and 22.

The project aims to provide the 700,000 inhabitants of Imbaba with basic facilities, infrastructure and services which are currently lacking, according to UFM’s official website.

The main promoter of the project is the Giza Governorate; other partner institutions include Cairo University’s Department of Architecture and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).
