EU provides €1.3m worth grants for development in Egypt

CAIRO – 27 July 2018: Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Cairo, Ivan Surkos, said that Egypt is an important partner of the European Union, being a major country in the South Mediterranean region, noting that the value of EU grants for development projects in Egypt reached €1.3 million.

He added that these projects are related to security, human rights, migration, sustainable development, research, innovation and many other fields, with the aim of contributing to prosperity and improving living conditions and stability in Egypt.

On the sidelines of his meeting with the head of the General Union of Chambers of Commerce, Ahmed al-Wakil, Surkos said that the EU-financed renovation and modernization of the prominent Al-Raml Tram network in Alexandria does not include the planning only, but also the restructuring of the Tram from various aspects. Al-Raml Tram network is the oldest tram line in Africa, and it connects Alexandria’s western and eastern areas. It is also one of the oldest lines in the world.

On the other hand, Surkos said that he on Wednesday witnessed the signing ceremony attended by PM Moustafa Madbouli and minister of investment, Sahar Nasr, for the expansion project of sanitation network in Fayoum governorate. This project includes the construction of wastewater treatment plants and the development of existing stations.
