CAIRO – 24 July 2018: Egypt has added 25,000 megawatts (MW) of new power stations to the national electricity grid during the period from June 2014 to June 2018, resulting in a 25 percent surplus of the capacity of electricity, said the Head of Administrative Control Authority Mohamed Erfan on Tuesday.

This came in his speech during the inauguration of four national megaproject in the electricity sector.

Erfan stressed that the state has a tendency to increase reliance on modern and renewable energy, to reach 20 percent, and to develop the use of nuclear energy and coal.

He also stated that the country has developed the distribution of electricity networks in proportion with the loads with an investment cost of LE 22 billion.

“Egypt implemented some important policies; including the issuance of a series of legislation regulating the electricity utility, restructuring the sale of electricity to improve investment opportunities, automating 456 service stations, and electronic payment service” added Erfan.

"We are witnessing the completion of 14 giant projects at a cost of LE 155 billion,” he said.

President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi arrived earlier Tuesday to New Administrative Capital to inaugurate three national megaprojects in the electricity sector.

The projects include three giant power plants carried out by the German company, Siemens, in the New Administrative Capital, Beni Suef, and Burullus with a total capacity of 14400 megawatts, or about 50 percent of the electricity grid, in addition to the world’s biggest Gabal al-Zeit wind station.

Elsewedy is the main contractor of the Beni Suef power plant, while Orascom is working on the Burullus and New Capital projects.

The wind power plant in Gabal El-Zeit consists of three projects, including 390 wind turbines, with a capacity of 580 megawatts (MW).

As per Beni Suef station, it’s built on an area of 500,000 cubic meters. The project consists of four blocks (cycle vehicle) and each cycle produces 1200 MW, bringing the total output of the plant 4800 MW, each block contains 2 gas turbines and 2 boilers to restore energy and steam turbine.

Moreover, Burullus station - which exists on a land of 250 feddans- will pump 4800 megawatts on Egypt’s electricity grid.
