UFM’s regional projects reach €5.5B: PM

CAIRO – 8 May 2018: Egypt is actively participating in all sectors in the Mediterranean region, Prime Minister Sherif Ismail said, calling on the Union for the Mediterranean (UFM) to exert more efforts to face the current challenges.

This came during Ismail’s speech at the UfM Conference on Maritime Transport and Logistics that is taking place in the Suez Canal governorate of Ismailia from May 8-9.

Ismail said that that the UFM has carried out many achievements in terms of regional development projects and programs, saying that €5.5 billion projects have been formulated.

He added that there are still big chances of cooperation among UFM members.
Ismail further said that one of the UFM’s aims is to achieve sustainable development in the water and navigation sectors in light of the unique location of its members.

He also called for abandoning conflicts to achieve the common targets of economic and social development in the Euro-Mediterranean region.

The UfM Conference on Maritime Transport and Logistics is being held under the theme “Success Stories fostering Intermodality and Connectivity in the Euro-Mediterranean Region”, bringing together government representatives, port authorities, key international organizations, experts and other stakeholders in the region.

The conference aims to highlight success stories of key Euro-Mediterranean ports in fostering intermodality and connectivity, and exploring opportunities in building upon and increasing synergies amongst main ports in the region, according to the UFM.

It will also promote capacity building as a driver of efficient and sustainable development of maritime transport and logistics in the Euro-Mediterranean region.

The Union for the Mediterranean is an intergovernmental Euro-Mediterranean organization which brings together all 28 countries of the European Union and 15 countries of the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean.
