World’s 2nd largest container ship transits Suez Canal

CAIRO – 3 May 2017: The world’s second-largest container ship, MOL Triumph, transited through the Suez Canal Wednesday and paid $950,000 in transit fees. The ship is on its way to Tangier, the Moroccan port, and is now crossing the Mediterranean Sea.

MOL Triumph, MOL’s first container ship, was launched on March 28. MOL Triumph is one of six cargo ships of the second 20,000 TEU-Class vessels, to be delivered in May 2017. MOL Triumph set off on its maiden voyage at the beginning of April 2017 and arrived in China a week ago, carrying 20,560 containers.

The container ship has taken the lead of 29 ships of the southern convoy, heading to the Mediterranean Sea.

50 ships transited the Suez Canal Wednesday.

“The container ship was charged approximately $1 million in transit fees, based on its cargo weight,” a source from Suez Canal Authority revealed.

The MOL Triumph’s crew received an honorary shield as a gift from a delegation of the Suez Canal Authority, which is a tradition for ships passing on their first voyage.

The ship departed China in April, sailing to three ports: Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore. It transited through the Suez Canal anticipating a stop in Tangier, Morocco on its way to Europe.
