CAIRO - 01 February 2018: The ministry of Transportation postponed the decision to raise the price of railway tickets, official sources told Youm7.

The sources clarified that this decision is temporarily until improvement on the railway services is executed.

The prices of railway tickets were supposed to increase from the beginning of February.
The railway authority’s board approved the new prices of the tickets with an average increase of 20-150 percent.

In 2017, the Egyptian National Railways signed an agreement to purchase 100 train engines worth $575 million from General Electric (GE).

The Egyptian Railways Authority budget in the fiscal year 2017/18 is LE 3 billion.

Minister of Transportation Hesham Arafat said in a June statement that it should have been LE 9 billion in order to continue its developmental projects.

The Egyptian National Railway Authority’s revenues increased 16 percent in June 2017, achieving LE 149.6 million, compared to LE 128.8 million recorded in June 2016.
