Projects worth $1.35 billion to be executed in Red Sea ports

CAIRO – 23 December 2017: The Ministry of Transportation to construct two container transshipment terminals in the ports of Safaga and Nuweiba, in addition to a cruise port, marina, business center and entertainment complex in Sharm El Sheikh Port, Minister Hisham Arafat said on Saturday.

The minister said to Egypt Today that these projects would create thousands of jobs for citizens in the Red Sea and South Sinai governorates, boosting development. He added that projects in Sharm El Sheikh Port will cost $600 million.

In Safaga Port, a multipurpose terminal will be constructed to receive containers and non-containerized cargo at a cost of $400 million on 500,000 square meters, with a quay stretching 800 meters. Its capacity will be 3,000,000 containers and 7,000,000 tons of non-containerized cargo.

In Nuweiba Port, a multipurpose terminal will be constructed to receive containers and non-containerized cargo at a cost of $350 million on a surface of 140,000 square meters, achieving integration with the free zone, which covers 1,000,000 square meters, in the same port. That project will facilitate trade exchange between Eastern Arab countries and Western Arab countries, and will be the beginning of the Silk Road with China.
