CAIRO – 5 August 2017: Egypt’s male population increased in June 2017 to reach 47.7 million, compared to 46.6 million in June 2016, the state run statistics agency CAPMAS said on Saturday.

Female population also increased by the same rate in June 2017 to stand at 45.6 million, compared to 44.5 million in the same month last year.

Egypt’s total population recorded 93.3 million in June 2017, according to CAPMAS.
The continuous increase in population hinders the government’s efforts of economic reform, Minister of Planning Hala el-Said said last month.

She said that the biggest challenge that diminishes the results of the economic reform program is the increase in population, and that if the rate of increase continued at 2.4 percent, Egyptians will not feel any improvement.

Egypt has embarked on a bold economic reform program in 2014 that includes cutting subsidies and introducing new taxes to rein in a gaping budget deficit.

The program was crucial for the country to clinch a $12 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
