CAIRO – 4 August 2017: After years of energy shortage and power outages, Egypt’s domestic needs of gas will be secured for decades as the country is expecting to see a breakthrough in its gas reserves when Zohr gas field on the Mediterranean starts production by the end of 2017.
Investing around $10 billion in the project, Italian oil and gas operator Eni is estimating total output of the field to be approximately 30 trillion cubic feet of gas.
Facts:
1. It is one of the largest gas discoveries in the world.
2. It is located on the Shorouk concession and was discovered in August 2015.
3. The field has an area of 100 square meters at a depth of 1,450 meters.
4. It has a potential of producing up to 850 billion cubic meters of gas.
5. It will start production through three phases, the first phase will start in December 2017 at one billion cf/d.
6. After all seven fields are complete by 2019; production output will reach 2.7 billion cubic meters per day.
7. A total value of $3.8 billion has been invested in Zohr so far.
8. The field’s development and gas processing plants are now 80 percent complete.
9. It will allow Egypt to export gas by 2018.
10. Eni and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation’s joint venture IEOC, holding 90 percent stakes in Zohr, agreed in December to sell 30 percent of the stakes to Rosneft, in addition to another 10 percent sold to British Petroleum earlier.
