The meeting took place in the Cypriot capital, Nicosia, to complete discussions that were held between the two sides during the 10th summit of the Trilateral Cooperation Mechanism among Egypt, Cyprus, and Greece, according to a press statement.

The two ministers discussed cooperation in projects to develop natural gas fields and benefit from the gas reserves discovered in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus, particularly in the "Kronos" and "Aphrodite" fields, and linking them to Egyptian facilities, a matter that will accelerate putting the two fields into production at the lowest possible cost.

The meeting focused on finalizing issues related to the legal, commercial and technical frameworks to set the stage for taking executive steps to develop the "Kronos" field this year, and other fields with the aim of creating an energy corridor linking the Eastern Mediterranean and Europe via Egypt, a matter that contributes to enhancing the energy security of the two countries, and supporting regional efforts to exploit natural gas resources.

They also stressed the importance of speeding up the implementation of these strategic projects in a way that helps in transferring gas from an undersea deposit inside Cypriot waters to Egypt where it will be liquefied and processed for export.

This will take place with the help of the multiple capabilities of Cyprus, via exploiting the natural gas in the local market or transferring it to be liquefied in Egypt's natural gas liquefaction plants and exported to global markets, a matter that will help support Egypt’s position as a regional energy hub.

According to a press release by the Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ministry, Badawi considers cooperation between Egypt and Cyprus as a successful example of regional partnership in the natural gas domain.

Egypt possesses a distinguished infrastructure that includes Liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants and transportation networks that would help achieve economic integration between the two countries and the optimal benefit from discovered gas resources, he further noted.

The two sides also agreed to continue coordination and cooperation to boost the existing partnership in a way that serves the interests of both countries.

Badawi extended an invitation to his Cypriot counterpart to attend the Egypt Energy Show (EGYPES 2025), to be held in February.
