CAIRO – 22 January 2025: In a recent Senate plenary session, Minister of Civil Aviation Sameh El-Hefny unveiled plans to increase Cairo International Airport's capacity from 28 million to 40 million passengers annually. This initiative is part of broader efforts to modernize Egypt’s airspace and aviation infrastructure.
El-Hefny outlined key priorities, including adopting international standards to attract more air traffic, upgrading radar systems, and enhancing airport services to meet global expectations. He also highlighted the significance of charter flight incentive programs, which not only boost tourism but also stimulate growth in related sectors such as hospitality, transportation, and tourist facilities, creating new job opportunities.
The Minister stressed the critical role of the aviation sector in national security, with EgyptAir playing a vital part in crisis response through evacuation flights. Despite economic challenges, EgyptAir has remained profitable and maintained its global reputation, evidenced by its inclusion in the Star Alliance.
Civil airports were described as essential gateways for advancing Egypt’s economic development, particularly in tourism and industry. Since 2015, the state has developed and modernized several airports under the New Republic’s vision, aligning with sustainable development goals.
El-Hefny emphasized the value of private sector collaboration in managing airports, using Marsa Alam Airport as a successful example. To expand on this strategy, the ministry has engaged an international consultancy to assess opportunities for private sector involvement. He clarified that these partnerships aim to enhance efficiency and service quality, complementing existing management practices.
In closing, the Minister reiterated Egypt's commitment to excellence in aviation infrastructure, with private sector integration set to proceed gradually based on the study’s findings.
