CAIRO – 22 January 2025: Minister Rania Al-Mashat, overseeing Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, and Helene Budliger, Swiss Director of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), signed an agreement to establish the Joint Economic Committee between Egypt and Switzerland. The agreement was formalized during the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The Joint Economic Committee is designed to bolster trade, attract investments, and identify new market opportunities.

It will address challenges in economic relations, review and enhance existing agreements, and ensure they align with the evolving priorities of both nations.

A key focus of the committee will be facilitating the exchange of expertise and best practices among specialists while addressing trade issues raised by the private sectors in both countries. Additionally, it aims to strengthen cooperation on global economic matters of mutual concern.

Minister Al-Mashat highlighted Egypt’s achievements in private sector development, infrastructure growth, and economic institution strengthening, underscoring the potential for expanded collaboration in new areas.

The partnership will prioritize critical issues such as climate change adaptation, poverty reduction, social inclusion, and refugee support, alongside efforts to enhance institutional capacities and promote green economic initiatives.

Future cooperative efforts will include green climate projects and developing technical skills across sectors, which will play a pivotal role in achieving sustainable development goals and fostering Egypt’s green economy.

Minister Al-Mashat also outlined the importance of collaborating on the implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), climate action, women’s empowerment, private sector advancement, and Africa’s development projects under the NWFE platform.

Over the past year, Minister Al-Mashat has held multiple discussions with Swiss officials to strengthen economic ties.

The current development cooperation portfolio between the two countries stands at $71.6 million, funding nine projects across various sectors.
