Cairo – December 5, 2025: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly visited Badr City today to assess the progress of the Egypt-Saudi Arabia electricity interconnection project.
During his visit, Madbouly underscored the importance of the initiative, noting that it is being closely monitored by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
This project is a model for integration and cooperation in the energy sector, and it reflects the strategic vision of both Egypt and Saudi Arabia said Madbouly.
He further noted that the successful completion of the project would not only contribute to grid stability but also lay the foundation for future regional electricity interconnections.
Accompanied by Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat, the visit underscores the importance of this monumental energy initiative that aims to connect the power grids of Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
The Egypt-Saudi Arabia electricity interconnection project is a groundbreaking initiative designed to enhance the stability and reliability of both countries' power networks, especially during peak electricity demand.
With a capacity of 3,000 MW, the project will link the largest electrical grids in the region, helping to stabilize energy supplies and reduce fuel consumption.
He also stressed the importance of adhering to the established timelines, with a firm commitment to completing the project and integrating it into the unified electricity grid of both Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Madbouly reiterated that the project is a national priority and emphasized that its progress would be closely monitored.
The Egypt-Saudi Arabia interconnection will help balance the differences in peak electricity demand between the two countries, and will enable both nations to maximize their electricity generation capacities and use energy more efficiently. It is also expected to significantly reduce fuel consumption and improve the economic operation of both grids.
Esmat explained that the project is an integral part of Egypt's broader energy strategy. The Minister noted that the project aims to improve the efficiency of the energy system, promote the use of renewable energy, and enhance service quality. It is considered crucial for achieving the country's goals of grid stability and sustainable energy solutions.
Esmat also highlighted that the project is a key step toward broader Arab electricity integration.
This initiative aligns with the vision discussed during the recent Arab Ministerial Council of Electricity meeting, where it was emphasized that the project would play a pivotal role in strengthening energy connectivity and ensuring more reliable power supplies across the region.
Key Features of the Project
The Egypt-Saudi Arabia electricity interconnection consists of three high-voltage substations: one in eastern Saudi Arabia, another in Tabuk, and a third in Badr City, east of Cairo.
These substations will be connected by 1,350 kilometers of overhead power lines, as well as marine cables. The project is being implemented by a consortium of three global companies, with completion expected by next summer.
During his visit to the site, Prime Minister Madbouly reviewed various components of the project, including transformer rooms and high-voltage equipment areas. He was updated on the progress of the work and was informed that additional work shifts are being scheduled to meet the tight deadlines.
