CAIRO - 18 November 2024: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The meeting highlighted the growing ties between Egypt and Brazil while addressing pressing global and regional issues.

According to the official spokesperson for the Egyptian Presidency, President El-Sisi began the discussion by thanking President Lula for inviting Egypt to participate in the G20 Summit. He emphasized that this invitation reflects Brazil’s recognition of Egypt’s significant role in the Middle East and Africa. President El-Sisi also commended Brazil for the exceptional organization of the summit and its commitment to prioritizing the needs of developing countries. Central to this commitment is the launch of the Global Alliance to Combat Hunger and Poverty, an initiative aimed at addressing food insecurity and social inequities amidst increasing global challenges.

President Lula expressed appreciation for Egypt’s active participation in the G20’s activities throughout the year, highlighting its consistent support for the priorities of developing nations. He also praised President El-Sisi’s personal involvement in the summit, acknowledging Egypt’s contributions as a voice for developing countries on global platforms.

The meeting also focused on enhancing bilateral relations. Recognizing the alignment of interests and positions on various global issues, the two presidents signed a joint statement elevating Egypt-Brazil relations to the level of a strategic partnership. This agreement aims to bolster economic cooperation in trade, investment, and development, serving the interests and aspirations of both nations.

President El-Sisi’s attendance at the G20 Summit, invited by President Lula, marks Egypt’s fourth participation in the forum, following its involvement in summits hosted by China in 2016, Japan in 2019, and India in 2023. Egypt’s repeated participation underscores its increasing international stature and pivotal regional role.

The G20 Summit, taking place on November 18-19, is addressing critical global issues such as social inclusion, poverty and hunger eradication, reforms to global governance institutions, and energy transition within the framework of sustainable development. The official launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, championed by Brazil, is a key initiative aimed at mobilizing resources to accelerate efforts to combat poverty and hunger globally.

President El-Sisi is expected to deliver Egypt’s perspectives during the summit’s sessions, focusing on its development efforts and the challenges faced by developing nations in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals amid ongoing international political and economic instability. His speeches will stress the importance of solidarity and enhanced cooperation to address these challenges.

Beyond the formal sessions, President El-Sisi is engaging in discussions with world leaders to strengthen bilateral relations, explore mechanisms to enhance international cooperation, and promote sustainable development goals. His participation reinforces Egypt’s commitment to shaping global economic dialogue, advocating for the priorities of developing countries, and fostering international collaboration to address shared challenges.
