CAIRO - 14 November 2024: TAQA Arabia, the private sector energy provider, and Voltalia, a renewable energy company, announced signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy.

The agreement, represented by the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) and the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), aims to study a groundbreaking 3.2 GW hybrid renewable energy project combining wind and solar power in the Suez Governorate to repower the Zafarana wind farm.

The MoU signing, attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, marks an early step towards establishing Egypt’s first integrated wind-solar plant.

Located 130 km southeast of Cairo, the Zafarana site, known for its strong wind and high solar irradiation, has been a milestone in the region’s renewable journey since its launch two decades ago.

As the existing 545 MW wind turbines near the end of their lifespan, the new project envisions 1.1 GW of wind and 2.1 GW of solar capacity.

Studies conducted over the next year will focus on assessing wind speeds, solar levels, bird migration, and environmental impacts. If deemed feasible, the project will support Egypt’s renewable goals and further engage the private sector in transitioning from conventional power sources.
