Petroleum Min.: Our goal is to raise mining sector’s contribution to 5-6%

CAIRO - 14 November 2024: Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Eng. Karim Badawi held an expanded meeting with the executive leadership of the Egyptian Mineral Resources Authority.
 
The meeting was attended by the head of the Authority, Geologist Yasser Ramadan, the heads of the central departments of the Authority, and the general managers of the various departments.
 
During the meeting, which was held at the Authority's headquarters, the Minister was keen to listen to the visions and proposals of the work team and the organizational requirements to develop the performance of the various departments that complement each other in implementing a series of multi-tasking mining work stages that include geological, geophysical, technical, mining, technical laboratories, economics, marketing, projects, licenses, agreements, investment development, international cooperation, financial and administrative aspects, and digitization.
 
For his part, Eng. Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, confirmed that this meeting represents the beginning of a series of joint meetings with the work team of the Mineral Resources Authority. He added that the results of these meetings will be built upon to contribute to developing the work and increasing investment attraction to the mining sector.
 
The mining sector was among the most important axes that were reviewed by the minister within the Ministry's work strategy in the Egyptian Cabinet recently, and the sector enjoys continuous interest and follow-up from the political leadership and the government to develop it and maximize its benefit.
 
Minister Badawi added that the main goal in the mining sector is to raise its contribution to the national product, which does not exceed 1 percent currently, to reach between 5-6 percent. He stressed the importance of working according to scientific and practical foundations to develop performance, facilitate investment, and provide an attractive investment environment that includes promising investment opportunities to attract more investments into the field of mineral exploration. 
 
The minister further highlighted the importance of the metal processing industries representing a basic added value to the Egyptian mining sector in order to maximize the return to the state and the Egyptian people from mineral resources.
 
Badawi stressed the importance of creating attractive and competitive investment agreement systems in the field of mining, in addition to diversifying investments and capital, whether national for the Egyptian private sector or international, as well as supporting the role of national government entities affiliated with the mineral wealth sector in the field of exploration.   
 
He also pointed out that the project to transform the Egyptian General Authority for Mineral Resources into an economic entity, with the aim of enhancing work efficiency and supporting decision-making, is moving forward and the necessary legislative steps are being completed to put it into effect.
 
The Minister thanked the work team for their efforts and keenness to present practical proposals for development, stressing the importance of concerted efforts, integration and teamwork in the spirit of one team at this important stage in order to achieve a shift in the mining sector.
