CAIRO – 3 October 2024: The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has entered into a joint declaration of intent with the Bavarian government in Germany to strengthen their partnership in the hydrogen sector.

This collaboration aims to explore opportunities for cooperation in hydrogen trade, focusing on production potentials and expanding hydrogen’s logistical pathways.

Minister Mahmoud Esmat emphasized that the declaration covers multiple facets, including advancements in hydrogen technologies, market development, and research on hydrogen production chains. A significant focus will be on leveraging renewable energy sources to produce green hydrogen, aligning with Egypt’s broader strategy to embrace low-carbon hydrogen as a promising energy source for the future.

In a ceremony attended by Egypt’s Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, and Bavaria’s State Prime Minister, Markus Söder, the agreement was celebrated as a step forward in Egypt's comprehensive national strategy for low-carbon hydrogen production.

The partnership is set to foster the exchange of knowledge and strengthen institutional ties through various channels such as chambers of commerce, industrial federations, and business organizations of both parties.

To facilitate the implementation of this declaration, both sides will create a working group responsible for developing proposals, conducting dialogues, and meeting with stakeholders to set priorities.

The Office of Bavaria, based at the German-Arab Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Cairo, will oversee the coordination of this working group.

Highlighting the ambitious plans for the hydrogen sector, Minister Esmat noted that Egypt aims to secure about 5-8 percent of the global tradable hydrogen market by 2040, signaling a significant move toward renewable and sustainable energy.
