CAIRO – 12 August 2024: The Egyptian government has entered into an agreement with the Italian company Eni to establish a stationary gasification unit in Damietta at a cost of $150 million, excluding a cargo storage facility.
This initiative, as disclosed by a government official to Asharq Bloomberg, aims to facilitate the conversion of imported liquefied gas shipments back into their gaseous state. Additionally, discussions are underway for the construction of a floating unit.
Egypt and Jordan are currently in talks regarding a potential partnership with an international firm to develop a floating gasification unit, as reported by sources to Asharq Bloomberg in July.
The objective of this unit is to receive liquefied gas deliveries, convert them to gas, and integrate them into the national grid.
In August, a government official informed Asharq Bloomberg that Egypt is targeting an increase in its daily natural gas production to approximately 5 billion cubic feet by the year's end, up from the current 4.6 billion cubic feet per day.
Notably, Egypt recently initiated a tender in July to import five liquefied gas shipments scheduled for August and September, according to a government official speaking to Asharq Bloomberg.
The official emphasized that Egypt will continue issuing import tenders until local production levels recover.
In July, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly highlighted that Egypt's daily energy consumption has surpassed 37 gigawatts, reflecting a 12% increase from the previous year and resulting in a 4 gigawatt deficit.
