CAIRO – 22 July 2024:  The electrical interconnection project between Egypt and Saudi Arabia is set to commence operations in the early months of next summer, according to a statement by Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat.

The primary objective of this project is to establish a collaborative energy exchange system that takes advantage of the differing peak times and increased loads in both countries.

Additionally, the project aims to optimize efficiency, effectively manage surplus electricity, and enhance the overall stability of the electrical grids in Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Minister Esmat expressed Saudi Arabia's support for the project and confirmed that progress is underway on both ends, in accordance with the agreed timeline.

This affirmation was made during a meeting between Minister Esmat and Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, the Minister of Energy of Saudi Arabia.

During the meeting, both parties agreed to establish joint working committees to facilitate communication, and follow-up, and capitalize on the development of the electricity network in both countries.

The meeting also emphasized the significance of exploring new opportunities and increasing private investments in new and renewable energy ventures, particularly in solar and wind energy projects.

As part of the project, three large high-voltage transformer stations will be constructed strategically in Tabuk, located in Saudi Arabia's eastern region, and Badr City, situated east of Cairo, Egypt. These stations will be interconnected through overhead lines spanning approximately 1,350 kilometers, with additional support from marine cables.
