Value of Egypt’s electronic payments, collections services reaches LE 2.5tn in 11 months

CAIRO – 23 June 2024: The Government Electronic Payment Gateway (GePG) of the Ministry of Finance has experienced growth in its operations from July 2023 to May 2024. The total value of services processed through GePG reached LE 2.5 trillion during this period, compared to LE 2.1 trillion in the previous fiscal year, according to a statement by Minister of Finance, Mohamed Maait.
 
The electronic payment service for workers' salaries in the country saw a growth rate of 24 percent, amounting to LE 299.4 billion, as opposed to approximately LE 242.2 billion in the same period of the last fiscal year.
 
Minister Maait further highlighted that the value of the electronic payment service for suppliers increased by 14 percent to reach LE 1.1 trillion, compared to about LE 989.8 billion in the corresponding period last fiscal year.
 
In terms of customs electronic receipts, there was a growth of 38 percent, totaling LE 284.3 billion from July 2023 to May 2024, in contrast to about LE 205.8 billion during the same period in the last fiscal year.
 
The value of electronic tax collection transactions amounted to approximately LE 613.1 billion, reflecting a growth rate of 16 percent compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year.
 
 Maait also noted the increased interest of citizens in paying government dues electronically in the banking sector, with a growth rate of 38 percent. The collection service's value in the first 11 months of the current fiscal year reached LE 61.4 billion, compared to LE 44.4 billion in the last fiscal year.
 
Furthermore, the value of collection services through government electronic collection machines (GPOS) increased by 31 percent, reaching LE 60.8 billion, compared to LE 46.3 billion in the same period of the previous fiscal year.
 
The government's online electronic payment portal witnessed substantial growth, with the value of collections increasing by 78 percent to surpass LE 1 billion, compared to LE 600 million in the same period of the last fiscal year. Mohamed Fouad, head of the Electronic Payment and Collections Unit at the Ministry of Finance, provided this information.
 
Fouad emphasized the expansion of electronic collection services through collection companies integrated with the government's electronic payment and collection center, which achieved a growth rate of 51 percent. The value of government receipts processed through these companies reached approximately LE 1.9 billion, compared to LE 1.2 billion in the same period of the previous fiscal year.
