CAIRO - 26 March 2024: Egypt's economic and social development plan document for the current fiscal year 2023/2024 confirmed Egypt's distinctive performance and position in the food security index, which is expected to occupy the 70th position in the year 2024 in its general index.
The plan document was submitted by the Minister of Planning, Dr. Hala Al-Saeed, and was approved by Parliament in its two chambers (Representatives and Senate).
The government enumerated the strengths of the Egyptian case as follows:
1- Agricultural infrastructure:
Egypt comes in fourth place, after Japan, Bangladesh, and Vietnam, globally in this index with a score of 85.6 in 2022, compared to (50.7 points) in 2012. This is attributed to the presence of effective storage facilities for crops and a strong irrigation infrastructure due to huge investments, which the state pumped to increase the storage capacities of grain silos and develop the irrigation network.
2- Food safety net programs:
Egypt ranks first in the world in this indicator, and received a final score of 100 points. This is due to the presence of food safety programs that receive government funding and support, and have witnessed increased coverage since 2012.
3- Disaster risk management:
Egypt ranks 30th globally in this indicator (87.8 points), and this high score is due to the existence of a national policy to mitigate the risks of pest and disease infection.
