CAIRO – 17 January 2024: Telecom Egypt has successfully obtained a license to operate fifth-generation (5G) mobile phone services after signing a contract with the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA). The operating license, valued at $150 million, has a duration of 15 years, without provisions for renewals or additional privileges.

The signing ceremony, attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Egyptian Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat, underscores the government's commitment to facilitating access to modern technologies for both institutions and individuals through Egypt-based companies.

Amr Talaat highlighted the significance of 5G technologies in driving digital transformation, expressing optimism about the positive impact on the national economy and Egypt's standing in global indicators within the communications and information technology sector. The Cabinet statement emphasized the government's keenness to enhance technological infrastructure, aligning with evolving global standards.

In 2016, the NTRA had granted 4G licenses to Egypt's telecom providers, with prices ranging from $300 million to $1 billion. Vodafone Egypt, Orange, and Etisalat Misr secured their licenses for amounts like $335 million, $335 million, and $535.5 million, respectively. Telecom Egypt, during that period, acquired its 4G license for a notable $1.1 billion.
