CAIRO – 28 November 2023: The Ministry of Transportation revealed in a statement Tuesday the plan to develop the area surrounding Gargoub Port - whose quays will be expanded to stretch on a total of eight kilometers - located on the Mediterranean in Matrouh governorate.

The government targets to establish grain silos to fulfill local needs and export; a plant to reassemble used cars imported from South Korea and Japan and then export to African markets; pipeline to transport oil from Libya and export to European markets; container freight station for cargoes coming from East Asia and heading to North and South America; logistics center; a textile factory; shipyard to build naval boats and possibly export; plants to process crops cultivated in lands reclaimed nearby; green hydrogen plant; residential neighborhoods; tourist resorts; and entertainment areas.

Minister of Transport Kamel al-Wazir told press that Egypt aimed at leveraging its coasts extending on a total of 2,500-2,600 kilometers on the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. Hence, the introduction of seven logistic corridors is underway.

Those are Arish/Taba Corridor; Ain Sokhna/Dekheila Corridor; Cairo/Alexandria Corridor; Tanta/Damietta Corridor; Safaga/Qena/Abou Tartour Corridor; Alexandria/Saloum Corridor; and, Alexandria/Gargoub/Saloum Corridor.

The last will have an economic zone spanning over 700 feddans (one feddan equals 4,500 square meters) reminiscent of those of the Suez Canal and Ain Sokhna.
