CAIRO – 26 November 2023: The National Green Hydrogen Council officially approves the National Green Hydrogen Strategy. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly made the announcement during a meeting with council members, where he discussed the latest advancements in the field.
The vision of the strategy is to position Egypt as one of the global leaders in the green hydrogen economy. By aiming to capture 5 to 8 percent of the global hydrogen market, the country seeks to make significant contributions to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, targeting a decrease of 40 million tons annually.
The strategy also sets ambitious goals for job creation, aiming to generate 100,000 employment opportunities by 2040. Furthermore, it aspires to boost the gross domestic product by $10 to $18 billion.
During the meeting, Randa Al-Minshawi, First Assistant to the Prime Minister and Head of the Technical Secretariat of the National Green Hydrogen Council, revealed that lands have been designated for various projects in the pilot phase. Additionally, lands are being allocated for projects in the first phase, indicating the government's commitment to the successful implementation of the strategy.
During the meeting, Chairman of the Suez Canal Economic Zone, Walid Gamal El-Din shared that Fertiglobe successfully exported the world's first shipment of ammonia. The ammonia was produced in Fertiglobe's Egyptian facilities, utilizing the hydrogen generated by the experimental electrolyzer of the green hydrogen project in Egypt.
El-Din emphasized that Fertiglobe's project aims to produce 15,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, which will serve as a primary raw material for the production of up to 90,000 tons of ammonia per year. This significant output is made possible by harnessing the potential of renewable energy sources, marking a significant step towards a more sustainable future.
