CAIRO - 20 November 2023: Minister of International Cooperation, Rania A. Al-Mashat, announced on Sunday the issuance of a joint communique developed in coordination with 20 development partners, international financing institutions, and global alliances in the field of climate action.
This announcement occurred at the end of the high-level roundtable held by the Ministry of International Cooperation, in the presence of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly.
The event included an appraisal from the institutions for the intensive efforts made by the Egyptian state to fulfill its pledges in the climate agenda, especially updating the nationally determined contributions (NDCs), which contributed to implementing the goals of NWFE.
The statement also emphasizes and confirms the continuation of development partners, international institutions, and all relevant parties to support national efforts to complete all projects included in the platform. It emphasizes continued cooperation for the successful implementation of the NWFE program, which is consistent with the broader goals of the global development agenda and climate agenda.
The communique outlined key commitments and achievements. It highlighted the Climate and Development Commitment, emphasizing a commitment to align with the Paris Agreement and Egypt’s National Climate Change Strategy 2050, acknowledging the synergy between climate action and sustainable development.
It recognized the need to enhance international financial structures, integrating innovative financing solutions to empower developing economies in addressing climate challenges.
The communique emphasized the importance of Multi-stakeholder Platforms, highlighting the role of platforms like NWFE نُوَفِّـــي in achieving national climate goals, fostering mutual accountability, and ensuring inclusivity.
Moreover, it advocates for the incorporation of just financing principles at national and international levels, emphasizing country ownership, equitable pathways, and good governance.
On another note, it acknowledged Egypt's Leadership in NWFE نُوَفِّـــي Program, recognizing the significance of NWFE نُوَفِّـــي's sector policies aligned with Egypt’s green transition strategies.
It underscored the need for collaborative efforts to unlock scale financing and innovative partnership modalities within NWFE نُوَفِّـــي.
The communique highlighted the importance of technology-based solutions in climate change, focusing on mitigation, adaptation, and resilient development.
Pillar-wise Achievements and Commitments
Energy Pillar: Commending Egypt's updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and securing a debt swap deal with Germany. Recognizing the importance of innovative financing solutions and technologies like "green hydrogen."
Food Pillar: Stressing the importance of robust and sustainable food management systems, acknowledging the interlinkage with the water pillar.
Water Pillar: Recognizing the importance of effective water management strategies, engaging new partners for funding in critical areas such as water desalination and solar irrigation.
NWFE+ Sustainable Transport: Emphasizing the importance of sustainable transport for an inclusive, resilient ecosystem, contributing to the realization of Egypt’s NDCs.
Call to Action
The communique encouraged stakeholders to facilitate access to finance and foster investments across all NWFE نُوَفِّـــي pillars.
It commended the role of the NWFE نُوَفِّـــي Platform National Steering Committee for effective coordination and transparency, exemplified by the first progress report.
It also affirmed NWFE نُوَفِّـــي as a practical and replicable model for mobilizing climate investments, contributing to global development and climate objectives.
