CAIRO – 3 October 2023: Source at the New and Renewable Energy Authority told Youm7 Tuesday that Egypt's first green methanol plant to enter service in 2026 at SCzone so that production would be used in fueling vessels navigating the Suez Canal as well as exported.
The plant will be operated by green hydrogen whose planned plants in Egypt are estimated to cost $85 billion, and expected to create 45,000 direct jobs and 250,000 indirect jobs.
Egypt targets to produce 500,000 tons of green hydrogen annually by 2030 capitalizing on 19,000 megawatts of electricity generated through solar and wind power plants.
Further, the goal for 2040 is producing 5.8 million tons capitalizing on 72,000 megawatts of electricity generated through solar and wind power plants. Exports are targeted at 3.8 million tons, which composes five percent of the global production of green hydrogen.
President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi announced during COP 27 which was held in Sharm El Sheikh last November the operation of the first phase of Egypt's green hydrogen plant, which had been established in partnership with Norway's Scatec. The plant is located in Ain Sokhna, and the capacity of its first phase is 100 megawatts.
