CAIRO - 9 August 2023: Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly held a meeting on Tuesday to discuss an offer submitted by a major foreign company to set up a giant green hydrogen plant in Egypt through direct foreign investments, according to Nader Saad, spokesperson for the Egyptian Cabinet.

Saad stated that the project is set to achieve an annual capacity of 400,000 tons, powered entirely by 15-gigawatt solar energy. The station's production of green hydrogen will be exported exclusively to Europe, with projected annual exports of up to $1 billion.

Heike Harmgart, the managing director for the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), praised Egypt’s capabilities to expedite the transition to green hydrogen in the future, in a roundtable recently chaired by PM Madbouly.

Harmgart added that the Egyptian government plays an important role in the production of green hydrogen, in cooperation with the private sector. During the roundtable, The PM also stated that Egypt signed more than 20 agreements with major companies developing green hydrogen. The agreements, worth about $83 billion, aim to produce annually 15 million tons of green ammonia and green methane.
