CAIRO - 16 July 2023: French rolling stock manufacturer Alstom plans to invest EUR 300 million in Egypt over the next three years to establish two new factories in Borg El Arab, Alexandria, for electric, metro systems, and monorail rolling stock, according to local media sources.
The Cabinet approved Alstom’s initial plans to establish an industrial complex in Borg El Arab earlier this month, part of a statement to increase foreign direct investment (FDI) through the improvement of the investment climate.
The two factories are said to produce electric and signaling systems and manufacturing parts for metro, highway rails, monorails, and railways. Their strategic location was chosen to facilitate trade in Alexandria.
Alstom is collaborating with the Transport Ministry to settle on the plan and blueprint for the factories. The design of the factories will be drafted according to the specifications of the Egyptian Railway Authority and National Authority for Tunnels, according to local media.
Alstom is a French manufacturing company operating in Egypt since 1980, contributing greatly to Egypt’s local transportation. Their aim is to create modern, safe, and sustainable transportation rails worldwide, and they aim to reduce traffic congestion conflict in Egypt in an environmentally friendly manner.
The company is currently leading a consortium in charge of the Sixth of October - New Capital mono-rail project and is the main supplier of the Cairo Metro, providing new railway vehicles for Metro Line 1, and managing the signaling and control systems of Metro Line 3. The company is also the key supplier of the planned Metro Line 6.
