CAIRO – 1 May 2023: During the Egyptian ‘Labor Day’ celebration, President Abdel Fattah al Sisi, on Monday ordered Establishing an emergency fund for irregular workers.
He directed activating the fund immediately after finalizing the legal procedures along with disbursing a subsidy of LE1000 for irregular workers.
Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi witnessed on Monday the ‘Labor Day’ celebration in Sharkia governorate at the Eastern sugar factory.
As part of the celebration, President Sisi saw a presentation of several projects that were developed with partnership with ‘start’ initiative to support the Egyptian industry.
President Sisi honored number of distinguished, veteran Egyptian workers by awarding them the Work Medal of the first class, and the Medal of Excellence for their efforts.
During his speech, President Sisi greeted Egyptians on 'Labor Day' and said that the Egyptian history have always knew the great efforts of 'our workers' that contributed to our development
Sisi also said that he has been following discussions on social media and hears the concerns of the Egyptian citizens, and affirms that 'we can overcome everything and all challenges' as long as 'we stand together'
The President took several decisions during participating at the Labor Day celebration, including: “Establishing an emergency fund for irregular workers and activating the fund immediately after finalizing the legal procedures. HE also directed disbursing a subsidy of LE1000 for irregular workers.
Sisi directed to “create a life insurance policy to cover irregular employment. Continuing to empower and integrate people with ‘special needs’ into different industries. Enhancing compliance with international labor standards and ensuring their compatibility with international standards that Egypt has ratified.”
Sisi directed government to coordinate with the private sector to achieve gender equality and integrate women into the labor market, developing and protecting their skills and ensuring a safe work environment
Sisi also directs launching a national campaign to improve the mental image of the value of work in society
During the celebration, head of the General Federation of Egyptian Trade Unions, Mohamed Gebran said that the ‘Labor Day’ comes amid great challenges that threaten global economies and inflation.
He noted that the Egyptian workers had the largest share of the negative effects from the temporary closure of some companies and institutions during the last period
He added that the Egyptian leadership contributed to easing the burdens on workers by increasing the minimum wage and increasing pensions to relieve citizens.
In Egypt, 1 May is known as ‘Labor Day’ and is considered a paid holiday. The President of Egypt traditionally presides over the official May Day celebrations.
