CAIRO - 10 April 2023: Consultationse on Egypt-Italy power linkage have been underway with Rome, a project that would turn Egypt into a bridge of electric transmission from Africa to Europe, said Ayman Hamza, spokesperson for the Ministry of Electricity Sunday.
Meanwhile, the world’s largest power linkage project between Egypt, Greece, and Cyprus is in the stage of technical consultations and research exchange, Hamza told Egypt Today.
Power transmitted from Egypt through a submarine cable would have a capacity of 2,000 megawatts.
The maximum demand in the Egyptian national grid is in the summer, while the demand peaks in Europe during the winter, allowing the grid to function at its best at all times.
Another power linkage project between Egypt and Saudi Arabia is also underway, where transmission towers are already being installed in the two countries. Peak hours in the two countries differ by six hours.
Egypt plans to transform into a global energy hub as the national electricity grid becomes stronger, allowing several power interconnection projects, the minister said.
Egypt can establish renewable energy projects of up to 90,000 megawatts. The huge surplus allows for several power linkage projects, he added.
The power linkage projects would maximize electricity generated by renewable energy and connect the grid nationally and regionally, stabilizing and securing supply, he continued.
