CAIRO – 22 November 2022: The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics released a report Tuesday on trade between Egypt and fellow Nile Basin Countries in 2021.
The report indicated that the value of exports to Nile Basin countries rose by 29.5 percent from $1.19 billion in 2020 to $1.55 billion in 2021.
Nevertheless, 95.1 percent of the exports' value is concentrated in five countries out of 11. Those are Sudan (53.4%) with $827 million; Kenya (24.6%) with $382 million; Ethiopia (7.2%) with $111 million; Uganda (6.6%) with $102 million; and, Tanzania (3.4%) with $52 million.
The top exports to Nile Basin countries are plastics (13.8%) with $214 million; sugar (10.6%) with $165 million; as well as salt, stones, and cement (5.4%) with $83 million.
As for imports, they grew by 39.4 percent from $562 million in 2020 to $783 million in 2021. They also mainly come from five countries, which supply 99.1 percent of Nile Basin imports to Egypt.
Sudan and Kenya also come on top with $386 million (49.3%) and $255 million (32.6%). They are followed by Congo with $111 million (14.2%), Uganda with $16 million (2.1%), and Ethiopia with $8 million (1.1%).
The most imported goods are tea, coffee and spices with $233 million (29.8%); livestock with $213 million (27.2%); as well as raw and processed copper with $111 million (14.2%).
