CAIRO - 20 September 2022: Each passenger is allowed to bring gifts worth up to LE 10,000, according to the advisor to the head of the Customs Authority for Airport Affairs, Ibrahim Abdel Latif.

Abdel Latif elaborated that the limit of the gifts was recently raised by the Minister of Finance to LE 10,000.

He added in a TV interview via phone that everything that is personal and household necessities is allowed, and intervention is made when the limit is exceeded.

The advisor to the head of the Customs Authority for Airport Affairs pointed out that each passenger is allowed to carry 5 phones, but he has to pay a fee of 10 percent of the value of the phone, and it is not specified because the phones' prices are variable due to market conditions.

He noted that they depend on the value of the "bill" owned by the traveler, advising the passengers to inform customs officers what they have of gifts and collectibles.

Abdel Latif revealed the details of seizing 129 grams of diamonds and precious stones in the possession of a passenger from one of the Arab countries, at an estimated cost of 29 million pounds, adding that great efforts are being made to seize many cases related to gold, weapons, ammunition, jewelry and diamonds.

He added that the authority's officers do not rely only on inspecting bags and luggage with equipment, continuing: "We rely on the traveler's body language and its confusion.”
