CAIRO - 24 August 2022: Egypt’s exports of domestic cotton surged 101.5 percent during the 2021 session (September/August), to hit 1,761 thousand metric quintals, up from 1 thousand metric quintals during the 2020 season, according to the state-statistic body.
Data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) showed that the amount of cotton production amounted to 2.3 million quintals in 2021, marking an increase of 33.3 percent on a year on year (YoY) basis.
India was the most importing country for Egyptian cotton, as the quantity exported to it amounted to 1.5 million metric quintals, representing 87.3 percent of the total quantity exported from the beginning of the season to its end (September/August).
The total consumer quantity of local cotton decreased 31.5 percent to reach 92.9 thousand metric quintals from the beginning of the season to its end (September/August) 2021 compared to 135.5 thousand metric quintals (September/August) 2020. This decline was attributed to the increase in the percentage of exports.
The quantity of cotton of the long-middle staple varieties amounted to 92.4 thousand metric quintals, allocating 40.4 percent of the total. The Giza 95 variety is the most existing variety, with its quantity reaching 81.4 thousand metric quintals, at a rate of 6.35 percent of the total.
