CAIRO – 15 June 2022: The Egyptian Electricity Holding Company and GE Gas Power signed Wednesday two agreements of cooperation on reducing carbon emissions.

Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker clarified, during the signing ceremony that was held in the New Administrative Capital, that the carbon emission reduction strategy relies on rehabilitating power plants, introducing highly-efficient units, and expanding the share of new energy.

One of the agreements provides that GE Power Gas prepares a timeline to reduce carbon emitted from gas turbines produced by the company. That also involves exploring ways of capturing and storing carbon, employing hydrogen fuel enhancement and advanced gas path (AGP), as well as converting simple cycle power plants to combined cycle power plants.

The other agreement is about operating an LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbine at Sharm El Sheikh Power Plant. That is because that kind of turbines depends on hydrogen fuel enhancement, emitting very low levels of carbon.

The Ministry of Electricity and General Electric also signed on Wednesday a cooperation protocol to train workers in the sector.
