CAIRO - 30 March 2022: Chief Executive Officer of the Egyptian Food Bank Mohsen Sarhan has said the charitable organization distributed 500,000 cartons of dry goods to meet the needs of the impoverished families during the fasting month of Ramadan.
In statements to MENA Monday, Sarhan also said the bank decided to distribute 10 million hot meals during the holy month at an initial cost of LE 350 million adding that additional assistance will be also distributed in the same month to provide food to the needy.
Sarhan said the food bank started last month contracting with food companies before the recent price rise to overcome the repercussions of the global economic crisis.
The food bank is a non-profit, charitable organization that distributes food to those who have difficulty purchasing enough to avoid hunger, usually through intermediaries like food pantries and soup kitchens. Some food banks distribute food directly with their own food pantries.
The Cabinet has agreed to roll back some COVID-related restrictions during the holy fasting month of Ramadan, to start early April, such as removing the ban on charity iftar (breakfast) tables.
During a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli on Sunday, the Cabinet's higher committee for managing the coronavirus crisis also agreed to extend opening hours for cafes, restaurants, and stores till 2:00 CLT during the holy month of Ramadan.
Moreover, event halls at mosques will be reopened and afternoon religious classes resumed only at grand (congregation) mosques, while observing all precautionary measures, especially wearing face masks and physical distancing, for everyone's safety.
