CAIRO – 2 December 2021: The German Company Siemens for Renewable Energy has announced the beginning of the operation of the wind farm in West Bakr area in Ras Ghareb in the Gulf of Suez with a capacity of 250 megawatts.

The company stated - in a statement today, Thursday - that the project was implemented by Siemens Gamesa, a leading renewable energy company in the world, and the company has successfully installed 96 wind turbines (SG 2.6-114) for the Lekela company to generate renewable energy through Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract.

The statement indicated that Siemens will provide a long-term maintenance service through a 15-year service agreement, and the West Bakr wind farm is now operating at full capacity for the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company and the New and Renewable Energy Authority, and represents the first renewable energy project in Egypt to be activated through an 220 kV insulated gas substation.

The project comes within the scheme of building, owning and operating for partnerships between the private sector and the public sector, and supports the direction of the Egyptian state in achieving its goal of increasing the proportion of electricity generation from renewable energy sources to 42 percent by 2035, and the project will prevent more than 550,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
