Winners of Egypt’s 1st female entrepreneurs Hackathon by ITIDA, Intel announced

CAIRO – 28 October 2021: The Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (TIEC), an affiliate of Egypt’s Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA), announced Thursday the winning teams of the first hackathon for women in Egypt “She Hackathon”, organized in collaboration with Intel, and Digital Egypt Innovation Hubs (Creativa).

The first prize was awarded to a team of three young women from Aswan governorate, for a mobile application developed to aid in combating harassment and violence against women, through features of voice distress calls and messages, sharing location, classification of places, according to the degree of safety, in addition to providing psychological support.

The second prize was awarded to “Trisomy” from Ismailia governorate, for a free mobile application to achieve effective communication between parents of children with Down syndrome and help them connect with doctors, nurses, and psychologists in their vicinity.

 

The third prize was awarded to “Fem Scan” from Mansoura governorate, for presenting an idea and a prototype of an application and a system that helps reduce misdiagnosis and the time it takes to perform X-rays, especially in women's breast cancer screening cases.

Cash prizes amounted to LE30,000 for the first winner, LE15,000 for the second winner, and LE10,000 for the third winner. The selection criteria included the evaluation of the problem, the idea of the project, the technical model, the feasibility study of the project, the final presentation of the idea, and the readiness of the team.

“She Hackathon” is the first hackathon for women entrepreneurs in Egypt that aims to empower women by addressing the challenges they face in establishing their companies and businesses. The hackathon provides tangible support and solutions for female entrepreneurs by helping them develop their ideas into commercially viable products and providing the necessary support to qualify them for TIEC’s business incubator and pre-incubation and acceleration programs.

Held over 3 consecutive days, across Creativa digital innovation hubs in 7 governorates, namely, Mansoura, Qena, Sohag, Minya, Ismailia, Menoufia, Aswan, more than 800 participants attended and benefited from the hybrid hackathon. 

The event incorporated a series of workshops and seminars in different fields and topics, presented by both Intel and TIEC, tackling the challenges faced by Egyptian women that could be solved by technology; consultations in techniques and applications used in the field of entrepreneurship; design thinking and ideation, in addition to mentoring sessions.

She Hackathon falls under the various initiatives and programs designed by ITIDA to empower Egyptian women entrepreneurs, aiming to boost their contribution to the Egyptian economy by increasing their income and their valuable and visible participation in the gross domestic product (GDP), as they represent a top priority of the Sustainable Development Strategy: Egypt's Vision 2030.

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), along with its affiliates ITIDA and TIEC, are keen to invest in women’s innovative potentials and encourage them to leverage ICT solutions.
