Egypt's production index for transformative, extractive industries hikes 14.49% in June

CAIRO – 23 August 2021: Production index of manufacturing and extractive industries (excluding crude oil and petroleum products) increased by 14.49 percent on a monthly basis, recording 117.80 (primary), compared to 102.89 in May (final), according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

CAPMAS attributed, Monday, the increase in the manufacturing and extractive industries production index in June 2021 to an increase in the beverage industry index to 368.63 during June compared to 325.56 in May, marking an increase of 13.23 percent, due to the increase in demand on drinks in the summer season.

The rise included the pharmaceutical, chemical and pharmaceutical industry index by 37.54 percent during June to reach 124.55 compared to May, during which it recorded 90.55, in order to meet the needs of the market in light of the repercussions of the Corona crisis.

The data of the Statistics Authority indicated that the increase in the index of the manufacturing and extractive industries came despite the decline in some economic activities, as the index of the mining and other quarrying industries declined to 201.01 during June, compared to 239.54 during May, with a decrease of 16.08 percent, due to the market situation.

The index of the base metals industry reached 67.03 in June, compared to 67.89 in May, with a decrease of 1.26 percent. The decline came due to the state of the market and building laws.

CAPMAS updated the index methodology using the base year 2012/2013 and at the level of the industrial activity indices according to the Industrial Activity Index (ISIC Rev.4) and using the monthly index (producer prices based on 2012/2013).
