The series revolves around Dr. Samiha Jahin Al-Suwaisi, who immigrated to Canada with her family, and returns to Cairo to search for her mother-in-law and aunt. But upon arriving in Egypt with her son and daughter she is surprised by the radi- cal changes that have occurred in Egyptian so- ciety. Egypt Today goes behind the scenes with the veteran actress to chat about her latest series and her relationship with its cast.
1- Why did you choose to present a comedy series for the second consecutive year?
There are a number of drama and social series showing this year so I decided to present a comedy series because I personally miss this genre, especially that I usually ask people around me for their opinion and the majority pre- ferred comedy. Common characteristics of comedy include its use of language, which ranges from vernacular speech to puns and wordplay, and its use of incongruence and juxtaposition.
2- Which type of comedy do you prefer to present?
I prefer to present the type of comedy that mainly re- lies on the situation itself, my performance and the rest of the cast’s performance. After filming the scenes or during the rehearsals, I am keen to see the feedback of the cast; if we all laugh I feel we are on the right track. I am happy and proud of all the crew members, especially those who are behind the camera because of their dedication and focus.
3-Give us a peek from behind the scenes.
Behind the scenes has been so funny whether in front of the camera or behind it. The meals we share always bring us all together, we are a fun family and laugh so much you can hear us in all the way in Tanta! The cast houses renowned comedians including Mohamed Tharwat, Shaimaa Seif, Outaka, in addition to rising stars Mayan Sayed, Adam El Sharkawy and ma- harganat singer Einaba. I can’t work with cast members that I don’t love, I have to love everyone to be able to work with them. There should be harmony as well, and this is the case between us, that’s why I very am happy with 1000 Hamdela Ala El Salama.
4-As you mentioned this is Einaba’s first acting experience. How did you find his performance?
I was surprised when I learned it was his first acting ex- perience because he is really good and has a lovely comic sense. We’d never met before the series but I had heard one of his songs. In all honesty Einaba’s acting perfor- mance is great and he has a bright future ahead. Different generations working together in the same series guarantees experience blends with youthful energy.
5- Tell us more about working with talented youths including Mayan Sayed, Adam El Sharkawy, director Amr Salah and scriptwriter Mohamed Zulfcar.
Before the series I worked with director Amr Salah in one of the episodes of SNL Bel Araby and I was happy with this episode, despite my fear at the beginning but Amr and the music band encouraged and supported me. I very much enjoyed working with Amr in 1000 Hamdela Ala El Salama and I trust both his vision and tal- ent, and he also has a good comic sense. The scriptwriter Mohamed Zulfcar was able to accurately draw the series’ different characters and presented a fresh dose of comedy. I expect that Mayan and Adam will achieve success in their roles in the series and also their upcoming roles in other projects because they are talented, committed, dedicated and respect their work. Adam mainly did action roles and is trying his hand at comedy in 1000 Hamdela Ala El Salama. Mayan’s part on the series is also dif- ferent and new. We are friends, we chat together always and hold open conversations and I answer all their questions as a friend.
6- You’ve been working with the same producer for the past 20 years. What is the secret behind this long-term cooperation and how would you assess the cooperation between Al Adl Group and United Media Services?
The secret behind this long relationship is that we understand and respect each other. Al Adl Group satisfy all my artistic needs, and after all these years together I feel that I am the owner of the company, not just an actress working with them. The cooperation between United Media Services and Al Adl Group is a fruitful one, as they are presenting three different types of series: comedy, social and Upper Egyptian drama, so I think it is a wonderful cooperation.
7-Who is the female figure that has inspired you as a human being and as an artist?
My mother is the most inspiring female figure for me. She is a woman who has witnessed many situations, has many experiences, gone through multiple crises and she is the one who made Yousra’s character.
