George Moustaki, French singer and composer, best known for penning Edith Piaf’s hit song ‘Milord’, passed away in May at age 79. Moustaki was born in Alexandria in 1934, to Greek-Jewish parents. A globetrotter who “never spent more than a month in one country,” Moustaki has been described as “a child of the cosmopolitan orient.” He wrote songs in seven languages, including Arabic, and incorporated Egyptian singers and instruments in some of his solo work.
