February 1 In this sequel to the 2008 Journey to the Center of the Earth, Hutcherson returns as the young adventurer Sean Anderson, who is set on a journey to look for his missing grandfather Alexander Anderson (Caine). Jordan, Michael Kelly, Anna Wood, Ashley Hinshaw and Alex Russell February 1 After the release of horror films such as The Blair Witch Project (1999), Paranormal Activity (2007) and sci-fi films such as Cloverfield (2008) and Apollo 18 (2011), the so-called ‘found footage format’ — video shot on amateur equipment such as a camcorder or mobile phone to convince the audience these are real-life clips found after the demise of the people who shot them — has become a new sub-genre of its own. Following this formula is the new sci-fi thriller Chronicle, in which three teenagers must learn to face their dark sides after gaining superpowers such as telekinesis and invulnerability. SAFE HOUSE Directed by Daniel Espinosa Starring Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Vera Farmiga, Brendan Gleeson and Robert Patrick February 8 Following international acclaim for his 2010 crime thriller Easy Money, Swedish director Daniel Espinosa was brought in to helm his first American film with Hollywood superstars. Oscar-winner Washington plays ex-CIA agent Tobin Frost who has been a fugitive for almost a decade after he went rogue. As soon as he is brought inside a safe house for debriefing, a bunch of professional mercenaries attack the place and try to kill him. While trying to figure out the infiltrator behind the operation, Frost and his guarding officer Matt Weston (Reynolds) become unlikely partners running for their lives. BIG MIRACLE Directed by Ken Kwapis Starring Kristen Bell, Drew Barrymore, Dermot Mulroney, Ted Danson and John Krasinski February 15 Fans of the Free Willy series should love this new dramatic adventure, based on a true story. When a family of majestic gray whales are trapped by rapidly forming ice in the Arctic Circle, small-town reporter Adam Carlson (Krasinski) and Greenpeace volunteer Rachel Kramer (Barrymore) join forces on a desperate rescue mission. They must convince both the Russian and American militaries to set aside their differences to help the whales. CORIOLANUS  Directed by Ralph Fiennes Starring Ralph Fiennes, Gerard Butler, Jessica Chastain, Vanessa Redgrave and Brian Cox February 22 Talented British actor Ralph Fiennes — whose colorful credits include The English Patient (1996), Spider (2002) and Red Dragon (2002), to name but a few — finally decides to make his directorial debut with Coriolanus. Fiennes takes the Shakespearean play, which was originally set in ancient Rome, and transfers it into the future. Yet the plot remains the same: When former war hero Coriolanus (Fiennes) is banished by Rome’s manipulative politicians, he joins forces with his archenemy Tullus (Butler) with plans to go back and destroy the whole city. HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS Directed by Tommy Wirkola Starring Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen, Zoe Bell and Peter Stormare February 29 Norwegian writer-director Tommy Wirkola directs this 3D family adventure that follows the continuing adventures of siblings Hansel (Renner) and Gretel (Arterton). When the mayor asks both of them to hunt down the evil sorceress Muriel (Janssen), Hansel and Gretel discovers her plans to sacrifice many local children at the witches’ gathering in two days. To make things worse, the duo also has to deal with the brutal Sheriff Berringer (Stormare) who has taken power in Augsburg and is conducting a very indiscriminate witch hunt of his own.
