Jeff Bridges, fresh from winning his first Oscar for Best Actor for his role as a washed-up country music singer in Crazy Heart (2009), takes on the role of the grizzly veteran US Marshal Reuben J. “Rooster” Cogburn, a role that garnered legendary John Wayne his sole Oscar back in 1969. The plot is true to Charles Portis’ original novel, where 14-year-old farm girl Mattie (Steinfeld) reluctantly hires the drunken Cogburn to help her track down Tom Chaney (Brolin), the man who deliberately killed her father. They are also joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Damon), who is searching for Chaney for his own personal reasons. |
