General Manager, Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at The First Residence
By Noha Mohammed
After more than 21 years with Four Seasons at seven hotels, Randy Shimabuku says he discovers each destination he visits through its culture and cuisine. He travels whenever he can and spends his free time relaxing with his wife or coaching his three teenage sons at baseball, basketball, tennis and football, all sports he has played himself. What is your favorite vacation destination in Egypt and why? The most impressive is Aswan. It has the scenery, the sense of  remoteness, the beautiful natural landscape, peace and tranquility and the surrounding sites — all in one. Breathtaking. How do you like to spend your vacation?  It depends on where I am traveling, but it should incorporate a mix of culture, good food, relaxation and activities. What is your favorite traditional Egyptian food and where (outside your hotel) do you like to go for an enjoyable meal? At your hotel, what is your favorite meal?  Sharkassia (homemade preferably). Outside the hotel I like to go out to Aperitivo, L’Asiatique and Charwoods. Now more than ever we need to promote tourism in Egypt. What efforts is your establishment making toward this goal?  We are working on various initiatives: the most important is to keep on communicating on all levels — sales, marketing and on a PR level. We are talking to the media both on a local and international level, we are creating very interesting and competitive packages, both local and international, to entice guests to come. With all the happenings, I think a positive outcome is that we have all been able to focus on the local market and really push tourism within the county. I think we have a joint responsibility as part of the tourism community to market that Egypt is still a safe destination and the uniqueness and beauty of Egypt If you could recommend just one thing an Egyptian should see or do in Egypt, what would it be? Hit the streets and mingle with the locals. That’s the true way to experience Egypt.
