There are two days left to vote online for your favorite contestants in “Sing Egyptian Women Let the world Hear You,” a competition for Egyptian female singers. So if you haven’t checked out the many talented voices in the running, do it now to help your favorite make it to the finals — not to mention enjoy a much needed musical break.
The competition, which started on November 15 is entering its final days of first-round public voting, ending on February 24. Organized by the US Embassy in Cairo and Share The Mic organization, the contest showcases Egyptian women's talents and offers them a chance to win a trip to one of New York City’s top studios to cut their first record.
Singing hopefuls submitted a video of themselves performing a song to the contest website, where the public can show their support for the best voices.
Of the 40 first-round contestants with videos on the website, only one will win an all-expenses-paid trip to New York to record in the Manhattan Center Studios. The selection process runs through March.
In the second phase, singers selected by the public will join a team of American musicians and music industry experts for three workshops that conclude with a public concert showcasing the contestants' original songs. At the concert, the top 14 women from the public voting and an additional two will be chosen by the organizers to move on to the next round of judging.
In the next round, the public returns to the website to vote for videos of the top 16 performances from the early February concerts. Each week, only the top half of the contestants will advance to the next round. In March, all 16 semi-finalists will join an American female singer for a workshop and concert in Cairo in March. The woman with the most public votes and the winner of the trip will be announced at this concert.
The panel of judges include Nevine Allouba a talented singer at the Cairo Opera House; Michael Hanky, a US embassy cultural attaché; Kevin Patrick, co-creator of "Sing Egyptian Women Let The Word Hear You" and
president and founder of The Greatness Gives Group. Also on the judging panel are Yasmin Tayeby, a 23 year old Egyptian-American singer, songwriter and music promoter; Cynthia Schneider, distinguished Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy at Georgetown University; and Nile FM radio host Mohamed Safi.
According to the US Embassy organizing team, the “Sing Egyptian Women” contest is a cultural exchange that also promotes women who use their musical talents to enhance public conversations across a broad spectrum of Egyptian society.
