The 43rd Cairo International Book Fair (CIBF), running January 29–February 8, has a new home. Some 631 local and international publishers representing 29 countries have set up shelves over 40,000 square meters in the Cairo International Conference Center in Nasr City, due to ongoing construction at the Cairo International Fairgrounds.

Organizers say that with its smart new look and brand new conceptual design, the fair is bound to satisfy any whim of the avid reader, with exhibitions, film screenings, poetry readings, book presentations, guest authors and a variety of symposiums to keep the general public busy. The 2011 CIBF honors the late Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz, who would have turned 100 years old this year. Among the living honorees are local novelist Baaha Taher and artist Mohammad Taha Hussein, who are to receive the Mubarak Prize for literature and the arts respectively. The ‘caravan’ is coming back to town — the Caravan Festival of the Arts, that is. Now in its third year, this cross-cultural event is held at St. JohnChurch in Maadi, bringing together local and international artists, entertainers, and religious thinkers such as Sheikh Al-Azhar Ahmed El Tayeb to build bridges of understanding between East and West through the arts.
Originally scheduled for February 3–9, the festival has been postponed due to protest events in Egypt; the new schedule had not yet been posted at press time. Reza Aslan, Iranian-American author of the New York Times bestselling No God but God, is expected to attend both the opening night and Literature Night. International actor Khalid Abdalla (Green Zone and The Kite Runner) is scheduled for Film Night, while popularney (flute) player Mohamed Antar will be Music Night’s guest of honor. Anchoring the Caravan is a week-long art exhibition, featuring the works of 45 Eastern and Western artists, including Egypt’s leading contemporary artist Mohamed Abla and expatriate artists like Roland Prime. Entrance is free, with 20 percent of the art sales donated to charities in the Middle East. Ever wanted to attend a Broadway show but never had the chance to fly out to the Big Apple to see one? Then you are in luck. From February 6–11 the Cairo Opera House is hosting The Best of Broadway, featuring excerpts from more than 25 of the best musicals ever shown on New York City’s famed theater-lined street.
In addition to highlights from Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita and Cats, the performance will showcase tunes from GreaseHairspraySaturday Night FeverLes Miserables, and the family-friendly Mary Poppins and Beauty and the Beast. The Best of Broadway is running twice daily at 6pm and 8pm.
