Dubai can keep Tom Cruise; Abu Dhabi is going for the scary movie sector. In December, Tom Cruise dangled off Dubai’s Burj Al Khalifa performing stunts for the fourth installment of the Mission Impossible franchise, due out next Christmas. Shortly after, Abu Dhabi one-upped its big sister emirate by announcing the production of Djinn (The Devil), the UAE’s first-ever homegrown horror movie. In a story heavily reminiscent of Hollywood fright films Poltergeist (1982) and the Paranormal Activity series (2007 and 2010), a young Emirati couple return to their homeland only to discover that their luxurious house is built on the ruins of a haunted village. Djinn is produced by Imagenation Abu Dhabi, the company that co-financed hits like Fair Game (2010) starring Sean Penn and My Name is Khan (2010) starring Shah Rukh Khan.Cult filmmaker Tobe Hooper, director of horror classics like the original Poltergeist and the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), was hired to direct Djinn while rising Emirati director Nayla Al Khaja will act as assistant director and executive producer of the ambitious project. Shooting started in March. |
