The fire department has been getting quite a workout lately. On March 22, the third time in less than two months, flames broke out at the Ministry of Interior’ Downtown building. How fires in security bodies even make it to the headlines anymore is a mystery. The fire started at 5pm as 2,000 policemen demonstrated outside, calling for fairer treatment, higher salaries, decreased working hours, canceling military trials and rehiring fired sergeant majors. The police protesters also called for the resignation of the current Interior Minister Mahmoud El Essawy. Despite the fact that the fire broke out during the protests, officials insisted the fire was caused by electrical problems and wasn’t deliberate. Since protests broke out on January 25, fires have been reported in the former State Security buildings around Egypt, and several other fires in various government buildings. Fire seems to be the hottest way to get attention these days, or as some allege, to get rid of the evidence. |
