Surprise, surprise: The state spent fortunes on election campaigns. General Prosecutor Abd El Meguid Mahmoud transferred the court cases against former Minister of Finance Youssef Boutros Ghali and former Minister of Information Anas El Fiky to the Criminal Court on March 22. Investigations found that the former ministers spent LE 36 million on a campaign launched in 2010 to support NDP candidates in the parliamentary elections and propagate the former regime’s achievements since 1981.

Investigations found that the former ministers spent LE 36 million on a campaign launched in 2010 to support NDP candidates in the parliamentary elections and propagate the former regime’s achievements since 1981. Come on, what is LE 36 million for a campaign covering 29 years worth of achievements? US President Barack Obama got away with spending over $700 million on his election campaign. But the issue isn’t the amount they spent; it has more to do with the fact that the money wasn’t theirs to take. The former ministers are accused of wasting public money as they took that LE 36 million out of an emergency fund dedicated for goods’ reserves and strategic services, meant to be used for dire national needs, emergencies and newly arising commitments only. The ministers also violated laws stipulating that election campaigns for parliamentary and presidential candidates, have to be self-funded.
